INCLUDE+ Inclusive Bilingual and Emotional Support for Migrant Young Children and Children with Intellectual Disabilities

Many european schools are welcoming a higher number of migrant children who must adapt to a new language, culture and educational system while continuing their learning process.

At the same time, teachers are also working with children who have intellectual disabilities or other special educational needs (SEN). When these situations overlap, the challenges for both pupils and teachers become even greater. Teachers often lack the training, methodologies and practical resources needed to support these children effectively. In many schools there are still limited tools for supporting bilingual learning in inclusive classrooms, addressing the emotional impact of migration, and adapting learning materials to the cognitive and linguistic needs of children with intellectual disabilities. These difficulties can lead to learning disadvantages, social exclusion and reduced participation in school life.

The INCLUDE+ project aims to address these challenges by developing practical resources and innovative approaches that help teachers create inclusive, supportive and linguistically accessible learning environments. A key result of the project will be the Bilingualism and Special Needs Guide, which will provide a pedagogical framework and practical teaching resources adapted to the needs of children with intellectual disabilities, special educational needs and migrant backgrounds.

An innovative aspect of the project is the integration of Artificial Intelligence tools to support the creation of tailored educational materials. AI technologies can help teachers generate personalised resources such as adapted texts, visual supports, language-learning activities and differentiated materials that respond to the specific needs and learning profiles of their pupils. The guide will therefore include examples of educational resources created with AI tools, as well as practicalguidance explaining how Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) and Primary teachers can use these tools to create their own adapted materials in a responsible and pedagogically meaningful way.

By combining the expertise of organisations specialised in early childhood education, intellectual disability, multilingualism and migrant integration, the project will develop tools that are practical, transferable and relevant for teachers across Europe. These resources will help educators support children’s language development, emotional well-being and social inclusion.
